# Fastmail, Zoho, Gmail or your own mail server > Connect Fastmail, Zoho Mail, Gmail or any mailbox that speaks IMAP to Muse, Claude or ChatGPT with an app password. Your agent never sees it. muse.space wrote this guide, and "we" in it means muse.space. muse.space is an independent project. It is not affiliated with Apple, Meta or any other company whose products it works with. Any mailbox with an app password, or one on a server of your own, works the way iCloud Mail does: your agent searches and reads, and replies once you allow it. Here is what each one needs. Read tools are on from the start; write tools wait for your switch. ### Mail tools - `mail.search` (read): **Search mail.** Search one folder by sender, recipient, subject, text, date or flags, newest first, without bodies; while code and link hiding is on, terms with digits or URL punctuation miss very recent mail. - `mail.read` (read): **Read a message.** Read one message as headers, plain body text and attachment details, with one-time codes and reset links removed. - `mail.read_attachment` (read): **Read an attachment.** Read one attachment of a message: the text of a PDF, Office or text file, or a picture as an image, with one-time codes and reset links removed. - `mail.list_folders` (read): **List folders.** List the folders of the mailbox with their role, message count and unread count. - `mail.draft` (write): **Save a draft.** Save a draft in the Drafts folder for a person to review, without sending anything. - `mail.reply` (write): **Reply to a message.** Send a reply to a message now, in the same thread, to its sender or to everyone on it. - `mail.send` (write): **Send a message.** Send a new plain text message from the mailbox now, within its daily send limit and recipient rules. - `mail.move_flag` (write): **Move or flag messages.** Move up to 50 messages to another folder, or mark them read, unread, flagged or unflagged, with at least one change given. - `mail.archive` (write): **Archive messages.** Move up to 50 messages out of their folder into the Archive of this mailbox, or into All Mail on Gmail; nothing is erased. - `mail.delete` (write): **Delete messages.** Move up to 50 messages to the Trash folder of this mailbox, from which a person can restore them; nothing is erased. ## Fastmail ### 1. Make an app password In Fastmail’s [settings](https://app.fastmail.com/settings/security?sessionpicker=1), under **Privacy & Security**, choose **Manage app passwords and access**. Sixteen letters and numbers. Choose "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" when creating it. [Open Fastmail settings](https://app.fastmail.com/settings/security?sessionpicker=1) ### 2. Add it to muse.space [Create an account](https://muse.space/signup?next=%2Fapp%2Fconnectors%2Fnew%2Ffastmail) and you land on the Fastmail form. Paste the password there with your Fastmail address, and we check it with Fastmail before anything is saved. Fastmail’s calendars and contacts connect too, as [your own calendar server](https://muse.space/guides/calendar-servers). ## Zoho Mail ### 1. Make an app-specific password In [Zoho Accounts](https://accounts.zoho.com/home#security/app_password), under **Security**, choose **App Passwords**. Twelve characters. Paste it without spaces. [Open Zoho Accounts](https://accounts.zoho.com/home#security/app_password) ### 2. Add it to muse.space [Create an account](https://muse.space/signup?next=%2Fapp%2Fconnectors%2Fnew%2Fzoho) and you land on the Zoho Mail form. Paste the password there with your Zoho Mail address, and we check it with Zoho before anything is saved. This is for a personal account on `zoho.com`. A Zoho organisation, or an account on another of Zoho’s data centres (`zoho.eu`, `zoho.in` and so on), connects as [a mailbox of your own](https://muse.space/guides/other-mailboxes#own), with the servers its settings name. ## Gmail Muse, Claude and ChatGPT can sign in to Gmail themselves. Connecting it here instead puts it under the same rules and the same audit log as your other mailboxes. ### 1. Make an app password Google offers [app passwords](https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords) once **2-Step Verification** is on. Sixteen letters in four groups. The spaces Google shows are not part of it. [Open Google app passwords](https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords) ### 2. Add it to muse.space [Create an account](https://muse.space/signup?next=%2Fapp%2Fconnectors%2Fnew%2Fgmail) and you land on the Gmail form. Paste the password there with your Gmail address, and we check it with Google before anything is saved. Google makes no app passwords for a work or school account, under Advanced Protection, or when your only second step is a security key. ## Any mailbox that speaks IMAP ### 1. Find its servers Your mail app’s settings name them: an incoming IMAP server, which we reach on port `993` with TLS, and an outgoing one on `465` or `587`. A mailbox with no outgoing server works too, for reading only. ### 2. Give the address, the password you sign in with, and the two servers. ## Connect your agent Each agent has a short guide of its own. Sign in once, and it can search your iCloud Mail, check your calendar and find contacts, without the password. ## Fair things to ask first ### What about Outlook.com or Google Workspace? Both come later. Microsoft stopped taking app passwords for Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live mail in 2024, and a work or school Google account has none, so each needs a sign-in you approve on its own page. ### My server offers IMAP on port 143 only. Then it can’t be reached from here yet. We connect to incoming mail on port `993`, with TLS from the first byte, which almost every server offers. ### Do you keep my mail? No. A message passes through our servers in memory for the length of the call, and is never saved or logged. The one thing kept is a short notice that new mail arrived, until your agent has it: the [security page](https://muse.space/security) lists exactly what it holds. ### What does it cost? Nothing for up to 3 connectors, and a password counts once, however many connectors it opens. Personal, for everything more, is $5 a month or $48 a year.
